This was certainly a pretty stretch of road although I did meet up with a lot of construction between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.
Morning came and it was time to push on, but before I did I decided to take a few pictures around the El-Mar Motel that I stayed at. The motel was divided into an old section (where I stayed in a tiny but pretty little room on the left of my parked bike) and a newer section which included a restaurant.
Behind the newer section was an amazing little discovery. There was a small calm creek that led to a tiny waterfall. Very pretty!
Just outside Parry, there were beautiful areas like this where you say people boating and/or fishing. As the road took you away from Georgian Bay and more inland towards Sudbury, I made a "stretch my legs" stop and made note of a more agricultural type of land.
Once I was headed west on highway 17, I was able to stop on the highway to take a couple of pictures of scenic views like this one. Why was I able to stop right on the highway? Get a load of the traffic caused by one lane traffic in various construction areas. On one such stop, I chatted with some fellow bikers. Marcel (left) and Daniel were from Quebec and were doing a ride around a couple of the great lakes. Obviously one of them was Lake Huron!
The trouble with being delayed over and over because of construction was that I had to sit a lot longer on my bike to go shorter distances. It meant I made more rest stops along the way. One such stop was in a place was this one which was an area museum.
And here's the world famous Thessalon!! Famous as the birthplace of my dog Maggie Mai! Obviously a logging area as well as a very pretty place.
Between Thessalon and Sault Ste. Marie, I stopped at this pretty place that had built a statue of importance!!
It's too bad you can't stop on the bridge that leads from Sault Ste. Marie, Canada to the U.S.A. I took a couple of pictures once I had to slow down for the lineup, but I missed the most interesting views and the pictures I did take weren't that great.
When I rolled into Munising, it was still light out with the sun just starting to set. I thought I had at least another hour of riding, so I decided to push on to Marquette. As I was stretching my legs and considering one last hour of riding, a fellow biker who had passed me on the highway only a short time before drove past. He looped back and stopped to chat. We told each about our respective trips. He had driven from San Francisco (where he's a writer - of both magazine articles by contract and for a computer company in S.F.) to New York. Once in New York, he had parked his bike and hopped a plane to Europe. He was now making his way back home (after a 6 week holiday) by way of the Black Hills.
I had spent so long chatting with my new friend from San Francisco, that I barely made it to Marquette before dark. Although he said he was going to stop in Munising, he came roaring from behind me and passed me, beating me into Marquette. When I took these pictures (1-3) by the tourist kiosk, I saw him go past, but he didn't see me. Too bad. It would have been nice to chat again. He was an interesting guy. By the time a I'd unpacked what I'd need for that night and the next day, it was at least three quarters of an hour later and I rode back into downtown Marquette to take some pictures. Picture (4) looks down the main street of Marquette... where all businesses and restaurants were closed by the time of my arrival! I drove to the lake and the view was spectacular. This building (5) faced the lake. There was a long, lighted pier which made a nice walk. There was also one of the ship loaders (7) like I'd seen in Ashland a week before. The moon shining on the water was awesome (8)! | 12345678 |
