Day Eight: The Journey Home

I considered staying a few more days in Southern Ontario but I couldn't stand the thought of more cloudy days. Good timing... I missed the blackout of all time!

"I'm all packed up and ready to go..."

"I standing here outside your door..."

Goodbye, Kingston! Goodbye, Days Inn!

Here are some nice people I chatted with in the Tim Hortons at breakfast about 2 hours out of Kingston.

I travelled quickly down the 401 in reverse. I planned on turning north to the Trans-Canada at Port Hope but...

... would you believe that the 401 was closed somewhere up the line (for who knows what) and there was a looooooooooong line-up of cars for about 10 kilometers. THAT part of the ride took me about an hour!

So I turned off the highway as soon as I could (Grafton) and ended up on country road 25 where Terry, with his house in the background, came over to give me directions to highway 7 west.

Upon getting onto Highway 45, I travelled for a while before needing gas. I stopped for gas and a drink at a neat gas station on a reservation called the Tall Teepee. The people there steered me to highway 9 west to avoid the extra mileage I would have taken if I'd continued on 45.

Even at that, I decided that since I'd been side-tracked by the traffic jam on 401, I might as well be side-tracked by Lake Rice.

Instead of backtracking directly to highway 9, I continued about a kilometre to highway 18 which led to Lake Rice. I'm glad I did. The scenery along the way was very beautiful and I took several pictures.

One of the first things I saw on highway 18 was a craft store complete with two teepees out front.

Farther up the road you could see the valley between two of the hills.

When I got to Harwood, I drove directly towards the lake where older buildings populated the lake (1).

The road ended at a long strip of land where people were fishing (2).

Looking west, cottages lined the shore (3).

As I left the town on highway 15 towards 9, there were several horse ranches (4).

There were also a couple of cattle ranches.

I pushed on through the middle of eastern Ontario and travelled as far as Parry Sound.

Many of the cottages and motels in the area actually were on the side AWAY from Georgian Bay, but they still were on water (1).

By the time I settled into a tiny little room in a pretty little motel, the sun was setting on Parry Sound's harbour (2-4).

I had dinner on the veranda of a pretty restaurant right on Bay Street (5-6).

On the veranda I watched "the picture show" as the sun set and the moon rose on the harbour (7-8).
